We had a fun week and really enjoyed listening to stories by Dr. Seuss on Friday! So many of the kids dressed up in Dr. Seuss shirts and costumes. We made fun hats from The Cat in the Hat and completed a few other fun crafts!
In math, we began our unit on subtraction. The students have been doing pretty well with this new concept! Every so often they may mix up addition and subtraction, but by the end of this unit, I am sure they will have a solid foundation. We will continue subtraction next week in math!
In language arts, we read the poem, What Day Is It?, which focused on the sight word "day." We wrote the word "day" several times, looked for rhyming words in our poem and then drew and colored a picture of what we each enjoy doing on Saturdays. We began a new unit in language arts called, "Expository Text in Focus." We read nonfiction books about African-American historical figures that have contributed to our society. The students learned about Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges and Mae Jemison. We completed various activities while we learned about these important individuals. Next week, we will continue studying the features of expository text while reading about rabbits. We will learn many facts about rabbits and write about what we learn. During word study this week, we read a poem called "After a Bath." It had rhyming words and we focused on learning how to read the words "try" and "dry." We noticed that the letter y was making the long i sound just like our sight words "my" and "by." We are learning that what we know about words can help us read other words that may be new to us. The students took the words for this poem and cut them apart and mixed them up. Then they put the words back together in the correct sequence.
In social studies, we began learning about technology in our world. We identified various forms of technology such as computer, smart phones, iPads, microwaves, washing machines, refrigerators, etc. We discussed how technology has helped us and made many tasks so much faster. We all know how much easier it is to communicate with others in today's world through the use of email and text messages. The students had SO much fun learning about how different things were a long time ago. Instead of going to the grocery store to buy butter, people had to make it. We took some heavy cream in a jar with a little bit of salt and shook it until we made butter. Then we were able to enjoy this delicious butter on crackers. Most of the Monkeys LOVED it!
Next week, we will finish our unit on technology in our world.
The Monkeys had a great time learning about our superstar student, Lauren!
