We had a short 3 day week! I hope you enjoyed the long four day weekend you had with your children last weekend!
In math, we completed our addition unit. We took our addition assessment that I will send home this week. We also read the book The Watermelon Seed, by Greg Pizzoli. Then we created a watermelon slice craft with a number sentence inside. They are hanging in our hallway now. Come and check them out! We will begin our subtraction unit tomorrow.
In language arts, we read the poem, I See This, which focused on the sight word "this." We wrote the word "this" several times, looked for rhyming words in our poem and then colored the illustrations. We focused on learning about fables this week. We learned that most fables have animals that act like humans (personification) and there is a moral to the story. We colored the pictures of events from The Ant and the Grasshopper and then cut them out and glued them to a sentence strip. We folded the strip and put it in our book boxes and can now retell the story. We completed a reading response after reading The Lion and the Mouse and drew the actions of a character from the story and then told the reason for those actions. For example, the mouse chewed the rope to get the lion out. The reason why is because the lion spared the mouse's life earlier in the story. We also read The Tortoise and the Hare and made a tortoise puppet and a hare puppet. We can retell the story now with the help of this craft we made. We will begin a new unit tomorrow called Expository Text in Focus. We will be reading nonfiction text about important African-American historical figures that have contributed to our society.
In science, we finished our unit on living and nonliving things. We took an assessment on Friday that I will send home this week. Next week, we will begin a new social studies unit on how technology causes change and how it has improved our society over the years.
