News for the Week of March 4th

Thank you very much for helping your child dress up and participate in the Dr. Seuss/Read Across America themed days this past week!  The students really enjoyed it and they looked great!  Also, thank you very much for sending in pictures of your child's favorite cultural foods and photos of ancestors!  We also saw some amazing cultural attire on Thursday!

We hope many of you were able to attend the Multicultural Fair on Friday night!  It was a great night with a multitude of information about a variety of countries, great food and great performances!

In math, we continued our unit on subtraction.  We used math counters and pictures of items to solve subtraction problems.  We also focused more this week on writing number sentences.  The students are getting more comfortable with the minus sign and the equals sign when writing number sentences.  The students are catching on quite well and I am having to increase numbers for many students to challenge them.  We will continue this work next week.

In language arts, we read the poem, Please Come See, which focused on the sight word "come."  We wrote the word "come" several times, looked for rhyming words in our poem and then drew and colored a picture of what our favorite pet is or would be.  We continued our unit in language arts called, "Expository Text in Focus."  We read nonfiction books about rabbits and learned many facts.  The students helped to create a chart where we wrote what they already knew, wrote questions we still had about rabbits and then we wrote our new learning about rabbits.  The students labeled a rabbit, wrote a caption about rabbits and wrote many rabbit facts.  We also had fun doing a directed drawing of a rabbit together.  We will hang our rabbit writing and drawings in our hallway this next week.  Be sure to come and see!   During word study this week, we deleted ending sounds of words and made new words.  For instance, we deleted the "n" sound from the word "man" and made new words such as "mat" and "map."  Next week, we will continue our unit on expository text and learn factual information about ladybugs.

In social studies, we finished our social studies unit on Technology in our World.  We read books about how things were different long ago before the technology of today.  We worked together with partners to decide what pictures of items were from long ago and which were from today.  We then did this same activity as individuals as a quick assessment.  Next week, we will begin a science unit on the needs of plants and animals.

The Monkeys had a great time learning about our superstar student, Siddhant!

We were able to learn all about Siddhant's life and interests!  The Monkeys are excited to learn about our next superstar student, Jonah!

Reminders
Our class field trip to the Thinkery will be this upcoming Wednesday, March 14th.  The buses will leave at 9:30 a.m. and we will have a picnic lunch at the park across from the Thinkery before our guided tour.  We will finish our tour at 1:00 p.m.  Please send a fully disposable sack lunch to school on Wednesday morning with your child for our picnic lunch.  Also, please have your child wear their "Class of 2031" shirt.  This will help us to easily see all students at all times.
